I've worked for UCSB's on campus tutoring center (CLAS) for 3 years, tutoring various lower division Calculus, Math, and Physics courses. I've had numerous private clients, both college and high school students. I love Calculus and Physics, and I understand how intimidating math and science can be for students seeing these concepts for the first time. In my experience, any and every student can be successful in these courses if they are willing to spend the time both on their own and with a good tutor. I believe that a tutor is most effective when he/she leads the session by asking students the right questions. This way, the student will come to the realization and understanding in their own terms, rather than just seeing or hearing it done. This method leads to better fundamental understanding of the ideas that come up over and over throughout math and science education.
